Earlier, nations were working together toward sustainability, green energy, and clean technologies. These efforts included discussions on climate change and improvements in industrial processes, transportation, renewable energy, agriculture, healthcare, and biodiversity. Unfortunately, before comprehensive systems could be established to reduce global warming, powerful nations halted climate funding and turned to economic and military conflicts. The Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine, and US-Israel-Iran wars have caused immense damage.

A long-running narrative of Roti-Beti – sharing bread and bloodlines – defined how India understood and managed its relationship with Nepal. The open border, nurtured on the premise of cultural commonality and civilisational kinship, was treated less as a policy choice and more as a natural condition. For decades, this belief-based narrative held. It has since faced several sharp mutations. And India has been slow to adjust and recalibrate. The same open border that symbolised trust became a corridor for threats India could not afford to ignore. ISI-backed networks exploited the frontier systematically — Lashkar- e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed modules used Nepal as a staging and transit zone. Radicalisation, quietly funded through foreign channels, built institutional footholds. Fake currency, narcotics, and human trafficking created organised syndicates operating with impunity.

Recent global developments of US withdrawing from climate change global mission, geo-political war fronts and economic manipulations giving emergence to new power games are taking our attention away from the more serious area of concern that the devastation process consequent to clean air deficit and climate change has already set in. Nature has the inevitable capacity to re-emerge in its own way and that is beyond human control. The whole biosphere is witnessing a beginning to its own end.

The hybrid stake-based relationship at the global level leaves no room for complacency. A new type of colonialism is emerging on the economic, geopolitical and strategic front, requiring India to remain alert to evolving threats.
